I found this study at the Terra website and I think it's very interesting for the insidesaopaulo audience. The São Paulo Metropolitan Railroad Network is expanding. Currently it is responsible for the transport of 7.2 million passengers every single day. Modern projects are currently developing the existing 335km network. The network is receiving the largest volume of investments in its history: at least R$ 45 billion will be invested in projects already defined.
In 2017, four new lines should be in operation in the "Paulista" Capital. Currently, four stations are under construction (4-Yellow, 5-Purple, 15-Silver and 17-Gold). The Secretary of Metropolitan Transport is also working on improvements to operation stations and optimization of existing routes. Check out how the current map and see the projections for 2020:
If you want to see the development of this project year to year, visit the Terra website and see for yourself. It is easy to understand.
On 2010, the SPturis (Sao Paulo tourism department) prepared this video advertisement of São Paulo but it has never been published it here. It shows a little bit of the city features, such as: Alex Atala's new dish, DJ Marky's soundtrack, a Campana brother's armchair design, and characters represented by street art paints crossing several landmarks of the city.
All these expressions were compiled and produced by Fernando Meirelles and directed by Paulinho Caruso to become a campaign of São Paulo Turismo entitled "Unimaginable".
That's the 6th issue of the Annual Hub Culture Zeitgeist. This is a collaborative global network composed of opinion leaders and professionals from various fields. And guess what: São Paulo is the winner (by the third year). With more BRIC cities in the top positions than ever before, but is all about Brazil and China.
The chosen locations are the ones that make a difference not only by economic indicators, but also the spirit of entrepreneurship and opportunity, cultural diversity and other creative features. (Click here to understand how they create this ranking).

On January 25, Sao Paulo celebrates 458 years. Also this year, Avenida Paulista, one of the greatest symbols of the city, complete 120 years. To celebrate these two events, the artist and architect Carla Caffé created a series of 20 posters that make up a panoramic view of the Avenida Paulista in Sao Paulo. The posters will be displayed in an exhibition held at the Cultural Center Funarte.
The exhibition "A(e)rea Paulista" has a panel 1.40 meters height and 11 meters long consisting of 20 posters, which show an overview of the avenue from the Vale do Anhangabaú until the Paraiso neighborhood, highlighting key monuments and Paulista buildings.
Studying topographic maps of the city, the artist decided to paint watercolors that show the contour of the region and streets that connect the landscape. The route passes through the neighborhoods Paraiso, Liberdade, Bela Vista, Higienópolis, Consolação and downtown.

Project of the brand new Itaquerão Stadium (under contruction)
According to the newspaper Estadão, São Paulo will be the city chosen for the World Cup 2014 opening game. FIFA does not have an alternative option. Although Joseph Blatter has indicated Rio as the venue of the event, Rio de Janeiro didn't apply to host the opening game. The FIFA congress that is going to happen in Zurich on October 20 and 21, São Paulo city will be announced as the address of the first game of the World 2014.
FIFA's decision takes into account the infrastructure of the city, hotel accommodation, transport and airports. As well as the agility of state and municipal governments to set the stadium building. Belo Horizonte and Brasilia, are also trying to host the opening match, but both do not have the same structure of São Paulo.
"Sao Paulo is most well-structured city in Brazil", said Emanuel Fernandes, state secretary of planning. In the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, there is only São Paulo as alternative.

The mayor of Sao Paulo, Gilberto Kassab, signed legislation banning cell phone use in banks and at ATMs in the city. This law was signed on August 26, 2011 and is now official. However, this law has not yet taken effect, because the banks still have to adapt to the new rules.
The fine will be R$ 2,500
The main goal of the new law is to reduce the occurrence of muggings against customers as soon as they leave the bank. According to the official information, it will be illegal to make and receive calls. Not even text messages will be allowed.
This prohibition is already law in two other cities in São Paulo State (Campinas and Franca). This is not a state law.
My name is Isabel Campos, I am a journalist working in São Paulo and, as part of my job, I fly every day above an estimated fleet of 7 million cars. From the top I can see a city that does not stop growing. On one side the luxury real estate boom, on the other the arid suburbs.
It is a privilege to see Sao Paulo from the top of an helicopter.
Sao Paulo thrills me when I overflight places like Avenida Paulista, the Sé Cathedral, the Copan building, Teatro Municipal or the beautiful São Paulo Golf Club on the south area of São Paulo. The Reservoir of Guarapiranga and also Billings Reservoir are real oasis located at the southern limit of the city, near the coast.
Flying by night is also incredible. You can see the light show and the size is breathtaking! Sao Paulo from the top of an helicopter is a privilege. Every morning I have the privilege of flying over the city I love.

The República and Luz Metro stations (4-Yellow Line) will available in September. The Metro Dept. believes that the quantity of passengers that pass daily through the Sé station will decrease around 20%.
Which means that 1/5 of passengers who are now using the terminal will migrate to the 4-Yellow Line. The same should happen in Paraíso and Ana Rosa stations (connecting Lines 1-Blue and 2-Green). At the Consolação station, which connects the Yellow and Green lines, the amount of people may fall of 33%. However, the quantity of passengers using the 4-Yellow Line will rise nearly 4 times - from 190 thousand people per day to about 700 thousand.
The new stations, such as the Yellow Line, will reduce the concentration of people in other lines, especially in connection stations (check the video bellow).
Inauguration
The exact day that the stations Luz and Republica will be opened has not been defined yet. When these brand new terminals start to work, the 4-Yellow Line will run full time daily, from 4h40am till midnight. Nowadays, these trains stop running at 9pm.
Skye Bar and Restaurant at the roof of the expensive Hotel Unique
Sao Paulo beats London, Paris and New York and becomes the tenth most expensive city in the world. Nowadays, according to Mercer Consulting, living in São Paulo is more expensive than in most European and American cities. The study is based on the cost that multinational companies need to spend to maintain a foreign official in the city.
In 2010, California was only the 21st most expensive city in the world. But the appreciation of the local currency (Real), the boom of rental prices and food have made this city one of the biggest jumps among the 214 cities evaluated.
Sao Paulo went up 11 positions and surpassed London, Paris and New York
Rio de Janeiro also rose in the rankings, moving from 29th most expensive city in the world in 2010 to 12th this year.
The world's most expensive city to live for a foreigner is Luanda, followed by Tokyo. Moscow is the fourth, followed by Geneva. Zurich, also in Switzerland, is the seventh most expensive in the world. New York is only the 32nd most expensive.
Scheduled for June 26th, the Gay Pride Parade celebrates its 15th year under the theme "Love each other, end homophobia" ("Amai-vos uns aos outros: basta de homofobia"). The festival starts at noon, and up to 3 million participants are expected.
According to the organizers, the event includes a Cycle of Lectures, a Cultural Fair, a Citizenship Award for Respect of Diversity, and Gay Day. This year, the Association of the LGBT Pride Parade in São Paulo (Associação da Parada do Orgulho GLBT de São Paulo) wants to promote a discussion about the prejudice of religious groups against homosexuals — which helped to inspire this year's theme.
On Sunday at 1:30 pm, there will also be a debutante ball. About 3 million people are expected on the Avenida Paulista, in the Pride Parade 2011. The organization is preparing a waltz in the center of the city. The participants will have to dance the Blue Danube with whoever is next to him/her when the music plays. All 17 electric floats will play a remixed version of the traditional waltz, created by DJ Ana John.
The video above, of one minute and 20 seconds, the characters are played by the actors Rodrigo Ricardo and Ramory Feldman.
Recorded at the intersection of Avenida Paulista and Rua Augusta, the short film shows the two actors meeting in the middle of the crosswalk and waltzing solemnly.
The producers, supported by SPTuris, are hoping to enter the Guinness Record Book with the largest number of couples waltzing in public. The current record is from 2010, with 1,510 couples in Bosnia.

Last week (June 5th), Paulista Avenue received a demonstration entitled Slutwalk, which has become well known worldwide. It started last January, when a girl was sexually abused in Toronto, Canada. The judge in charge of the incident said that women should not dress like sluts. It was the starting point of a demonstration against this sort of mentality. Several countries have already participated in the "Slutwalk", organized by girls that have something to say about this issue.
SlutWalk Sao Paulo 2011 - Avenida Paulista
Inside Sao Paulo had the chance to interview one of the organizers of this demonstration in Sao Paulo. Solange De-Ré is the author of the blog talkingvaca. She and some of her friends took the initiative to bring the event to Brazil. Read on to see what she has to say:
What are your thoughts on the Slut Walk?
It was the right time. This is the country of Carnival, and when it ends, does everyone become a moralist? When the carnival ends, does wearing short clothes mean you’re a whore?
De-Ré and Mado
Did you get idea on the SlutWalk originated in Canada?
I've got a blog where we’ve been talking about these issues for a while now (since 2008). Coincidentally, my main issue is the relationship between men and women in society, this sort of thing. Mado (one of three organizers of the first Slut Walk in Brazil) saw the story on the internet and told me about it, and asked me to arrange a meeting with some people to ask what everyone thought, to try to discuss it. Our idea was to gather about 50 people, but we were surprised because it became something much bigger. It’s not something to be happy about, because that means the problem is serious here in Brazil. However, we are happy for people to come forward and say they are uncomfortable with this, that these women were willing to participate. It has been very positive.
So, it is bringing up this issue ...
We got in touch with the organizers from Canada.
Do you think there is something specific from this issue that needs to be discussed in Brazil? Something that deserves more emphasis?
Yes, the foremost issue -- apart of the poor treatment women receive -- is violence. It’s too common around here. I know of cases of people close to me, and they’re independent of social class -- people who are from privileged social classes have been beaten by their husbands and think they deserve it. Nobody deserves it!
Do you think that, by bringing this to the street, you can promote a discussion about it?
Yes. But we have to take it back inside the houses where the dad, when raising his children, says the male child has complete freedom to do anything he wants and where sons are even encouraged to have multiple female partners, and where daughters are simultaneously forced to behave and not to embarrass the family. Girls must be concerned about the way they dress, the way they speak; Girls have to hide their number of sexual partners, because otherwise no one will marry them. Is this country free or not?
But do you believe that this old-fashioned behavior and ideas still influence the younger generation?
Yes, certainly. One thing that apparently has nothing to do with the other groups but the Nazis. Look, Nazi group in Latin America? We are all descendants of blacks and Indians. These groups spread exaggerated machismo which says that there needs to be a man to “break in” the woman. We still see stories of violence in the news, and almost are all young people between 16 and 18 years old. In newspapers, we see the news that a husband killed his wife, or of high school couples, where a boyfriend killed the girlfriend. It’s cultural.
Do you think the name "Marcha das Vadias" (Slut Walk) had an impact?
It's an ironic name. The women are very afraid of the name that they can receive from men and other women also. There is also a machismo between women. Girls call each other "slut" when they want to tease or insult each other.
While waiting to interview you, a guy came and asked me what was happening. I explained that it was the Slut Walk, and he said, “Nice!”
The name strikes a cord because we're not used to using the word in a good way. But we’re using it ironically. It’s a word we [women] always hear from people wanting to offend us. Some people say they do not want to be part of the slutwalk because they are not whores. But above all, any woman that is called a “slut” or a “whore” is still a woman: in some cases, she’s a woman that maybe didn't have the same chances I did, and who finds herself offering what she has just to make some money. There are bigger problems in Brazil, like political corruption, child abuse and illegal trafficking of wild animals. The fact that women are selling themselves is their choice. They should be free to do what they want.
The SlutWalk Sao Paulo brought in around 300 people, and it was a peaceful demonstration. Sao Paulo has hosted several popular events, and most of the recent ones were organized via Facebook and other social networks. Keep following Inside Sao Paulo to find out about more events like this one.
