Dancing in the dark: Blind ballerinas from Sao Paulo are needing your help to make a movie

Have you ever tried to close your eyes when you're dancing? It's quite exciting for a while, isn't it? But I wonder how you, that is in front of this screen, would feel if could not read this post. I also wonder what would I do, if I could not see and needed hopelessly to find the toilet bowl — generally we men only close our eyes and place our hand on the wall after begin to pee. I'm sure I would be absolutely lost.

Unfortunately, when most of the people 'see' on the street some brave person that can't 'see', don't think that much about the daily life of a blind individual. It's dramatic for us, to think about being in the dark for ever. It would be a huge paradigm break. However, what would you think if I tell you that lots of them dance ballet? Another paradigm break?

There is a ballet school here in São Paulo that teaches blind people to dance. It's amazing to see how they perform. The project was started 16 years ago by the ballet teacher Fernanda Bianchini and some of the dancers still practicing until now, such as Geysa that lost her sight when she was 10 years old. Nowadays they are preparing themselves to perform at the classic Municipal Theatre of São Paulo. Last year, they performed at the 2012 Paralympics closing ceremony in London. Click on this link to view the video made by BBC and find out how strong is the feeling.

Film project
The film director Alexandre Peralta, which is a Brazilian studying in USA, has been following the ballet school on the last few years and is willing to produce a documentary film about the people related to the school. The film entitled "Looking at the Stars" wants to show how the school is important on their lives. According to him, "this movie is about their passion for doing something that seemed unreachable for them".

Currently he and his team are trying to raise money to make it possible via the Kickstarter website. The project needs US$ 16,000 to be produced and it will be available for donation till February 5th. They want to shoot in the Summer of 2013 and need money for the trip, to host and pay the crew (5 people) and afford the expenses, that includes rentals, equipment, locations and everything else.

It is extremely exciting to find that we are able to do seemingly impossible things when sometimes what we want is just to feel alive. Insidesaopaulo deeply supports this project! Do the same and help this group to make their dream come true. Donate. They need $16,000 by Feb 5th!

Facts and Systems of Antony Gormley Still Being in Sao Paulo

Event Horizon can be seen on the top of some buildings on the city centre
The renowned English artist Antony Gormley, 61, has just arrived in Sao Paulo and is opening two exhibitions of his work at once. The Still Being is located in the CCBB and Facts and Systems is addressed at the White Cube.

Still Being
The Still Being exhibition is located in Sao Paulo downtown, and brings 27 sculptures in the shape of men made of iron and full-scale. Placed singly at the top of the buildings, quietly they transform the urban landscape of the region.

The exhibition includes four major installations alongside a number of works and other models. The Entitled Event Horizon* was recently seen in New York (2010) in the Madison Square. Some people were frightened because they thought that the sculptures could be potential suicides. The sculptor, who has placed his work on the ocean and also on the nature, have fun with this story and reveals himself impressed with the architecture of São Paulo. "It looks like a piece of geology, unconscious, made with clever use of concrete and graffiti. The buildings are like crystals," he says.

Since last week, Gormley, is in São Paulo to assemble his exhibition - which is curated by Marcello Dantas and then proceed to the Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia. His experience in the metropolis has been "inspiring," he says. He created in 1992 the Amazonian Field with thousands of tiny figures carved in terracotta - work done for the ECO 92 and displayed in Rondônia.

Facts and Systems
Winner of the Turner Prize in 1994, it is also contemplated in the city with the show Facts and Systems, prepared especially for his English gallery, White Cube, who came to attend the Art SP-2012 and rented a shed of 500 square meters near the Park Ibirapuera.

(*) The basic principle of this work is a conceptual idea that we are limited by perception. The body is taken from where it normally is and is exposed against the sky, looking at a horizon that we can not see why we are embedded in the city.

Zilvinas Kempinas brings another exhibition to Sao Paulo. Check it out!

The Lithuanian artist Zilvinas Kempinas arrives for the second time at the Galeria Leme with a solo exhibition of his kinetic sculptural installations created with fans and unspooled magnetic tape (check out the video made at MoMA last November). Despite that, he will also bring new pieces that traverse the boundaries between drawing, painting and sculpture.

These never before seen works are composed entirely of straight polyester thread that crisscross the surface of panels full of pins spaced all around it.

Each piece is titled after a star, and their radial vortexes recall models of space-time warped by celestial objects. The works also parallel the combination of mathematical abstraction and sheer wonder that underlies our conception of space. It's worth a visit!

About
Zilvinas Kempinas
has had numerous solo exhibitions internationally, including Galerie Yvon Lambert, Paris and New York; The Garage Center for Contemporary Culture, Moscow; Baltic Center for Contemporary Art, Gateshead; Wien Kunsthalle; Contemporary Art Center, Vilnius; and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. His work has also been seen in important group exhibitions including ‘On Line: Drawing Through the Twentieth Century’, MoMA, New York; Yokohama Triennale, Japan; Liverpool Biennale, England; and Manifesta7, Bolzano. In 2009, the artist represented Lithuania at the 53rd Venice Biennial. Kempinas’ work can be seen in the current display of the permanent collection at Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Mocidade Alegre is the winner of the Sao Paulo Carnival 2012 with theme honoring 100 years of Jorge Amado

The Mocidade, champion of 2012, marched with 3,500 members, 25 wards and five floats
After a tremendous confusion in counting the votes of the jurors, the Independent Liga Independente das Escolas de Samba de São Paulo announced that the Mocidade Alegre is the winner of the Sao Paulo Carnival 2012. The decision came from the presidents of the Samba Schools, by 7 votes to 5. The Samba schools Camisa Verde e Branco and Pérola Negra were downgraded.

Big mess
Near the end of counting, when a single note 9.9 would be enough to give the title to the Mocidade Alegre, there was a invasion of a group of members of the samba schools (that weren't happy with the results). During the mess, a man could get the votes of the judges and tear them in front of everyone. There was no copy of the votes. Each of the ballot counting is done with banknote, with nine safety items and bar codes to prevent forgeries. Unfortunately, it was not enough.
