Urban Bike in Sao Paulo

Tourists who stay in Sao Paulo will soon have a new way to experience the city: on two wheels, they will visit museums and go to clubs following professional cyclists.The Urban Bike project, launched this week, will start as a pilot project at the Hotel Unique, and in June 2011, will be expanded to other hotels and open to everyone. The idea is to reach 200 hotels, integrating a network until 2014.

The pilot project will work only abouve invitation until December. At this stage routes, reservation system and the operation of the program will be tested. In the second stage in January, the project will be open to guests of the Unique Hotel. In June it will be expanded to other hotels and anyone interested can participate, even if not a guest of the hotel.

The idea came for the 2014 World Cup. In the 2006 World Cup in Germany, for example, there was full use of bike.The tours will be guided by personal bikers who know the city very well. They are urban cyclists who have experience and a developed cultural repertoire.

The First Luxury Hotel of Sao Paulo closes its doors on Sunday, December 20th

The Hotel Ca'd'Oro, recently indicated by insidesaopaulo will close its doors for inability to remain profitable during last years.

Founded in 1956, the Hotel will be open only until the 20th of December. It's famous and classic restaurant closed yesterday December 18th. The reason for the closure was a long decline that the Rua Augusta's region (address of the Hotel) has crossed. Frequented by prostitutes and subject to urban violence during the last decades, the region of the 'baixo Augusta' (down Augusta) became synonymous of preconcept to the luxury hotel goers.

Over the past decades, new shopping areas, construction of flats and economic centers have been organized in other areas of the city and it took the Rua Augusta off the plot.

Currently the region has changed and become promising. Projects promising revitalization in the city center are already taking place and changing the whole region, as well as new investors have bet their chips on site. However, the first 5-star hotel of the city did not resist and will close completely.

Despite the news, Fabrízio Guzzoni (general manager and grandson of the Hotel founder) states that this is not the end of the project. He will go after new investors to reopen the doors again for the 2014 World Cup.

There are 6 different Formule 1 in town (located at Jardins, Morumbi, Paraíso, Paulista, São João and Tamboré) but the Inside São Paulo advice goes to the one close to the Av. Paulista. It's a great location (close to the subway/metro, Rua Augusta and MASP) for a reasonable price.

Formule 1 is a low budget chain hotel where three persons can book a nice room for prices ranging between R$ 85 and R$ 109 in São Paulo. The Paulista's Formule 1 costs R$ 109. It's a standard price. It doesn't matter if you want to sleep by yourself or bring up two other persons to your room.

The deal is: a double bed plus a single bed above (sort of bunk), cable TV, Air con, desk and clean sheets every day. There is no free breakfast but they offer a nice self-service all-you-can-eat for R$ 6 each person. There is a deal for breakfast in Brazil. If the reservation is made via internet and you show a STB/ISIC student card when you check in, you and your room mate will get a free breakfast. It's better to check before you make the reservation but the tip stills.
