F-Indy 2012: Anhembi Circuit expects 30 thousand people this year

The fourth round of the 2012 IndyCar Series take place in São Paulo this weekend. According to the Brazilian Hotel Industry in the State of São Paulo (Abih-SP), the city will receive up to 30 thousand tourists - among spectators, attendants, mechanics, teams, sponsors and journalists.

Regarding the 31 thousand tickets (almost sold out), about eight thousand were purchased by people who do not live in Sao Paulo. According to Luiz Sales, director of SPTuris, the debut of the Brazilian driver Rubens Barrichello, who just quit his career in Formula 1, helped to sell more tickets this year. It was much faster than the two previous editions.

It is estimated that the city move about R$ 85 million with the Formula Indy this year. About R$ 5 million more than in 2011. Hospitality is the higher cost of this calculation.

The Indy is still far from being compared to Formula 1 in São Paulo, one of the most important events for the city's tourism - held at the Interlagos Speedway, the race moves R$ 240 million during its three days. The competition, however, occurs in the city since 1989.

The photographer Gilberto Perin organized an exhibition entitled "Vestiário" (Dressing Room) that is displayed at the Sao Paulo Soccer Museum. The author's idea is to present the behind the scenes of a soccer team off the field. The exhibition brings photos, objects, art and video mapping that introduces the unknown "dressing room".

To gather this material, the photographer followed the Grêmio Esportivo do Brasil, during the competition for the title of the 2nd Division League 2010 on the Rio Grande do Sul State. It's worth a visit, especially if you do not know this museum!

Kassab has just approved R$ 12 million to ensure the Indy 2012 in Sao Paulo

According to the newspaper Estadão, the Mayor Gilberto Kassab (PSD) has just approved R$ 12 million for the realization of the Formula Indy 2012 in Sao Paulo. The additive to the contract with the Bandeirantes TV was published today in the Diário Oficial da Cidade. The government expects the event brings about R$ 100 million to the economy of the city, especially on the restaurants and the 41,000 jobs in the hotel network.

If confirmed by the organization of the Indy, the race will happen for the third consecutive year in Sao Paulo. In the last two years, however, the rains damaged the race, since the Anhembi track - located beside the Marginal Tietê -, has several flooding points.

During the race performed in 2011, which should have happened on Sunday was postponed to the following day due the rain. The race was held on a Monday and had a major impact on traffic. In 2010, the first outing in Brazil also caused disorder in traffic in the region of Anhembi.

What else?
Kassab also approved today the three events that occur on the Avenida Paulista: the New Year's Eve Festival, the São Silvestre Race and the Gay Pride Parade.

The Morumbi Stadium is a strong candidate to host an UFC event on June 2012

The UFC president, Dana White is in Sao Paulo to select fighters for "The Ultimate Fighter", reality show to be held in Sao Paulo. At the same time, his team is visiting the Morumbi Stadium, where probably in June 2012, the event "Finale" will be held, where will be the final fight between the competitors of the program and also a fight between Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort.

The choice of Morumbi is not certain yet because it's an open stadium and the weather can be a problem. According to Dana White, fights outdoors represent a risk. The fighters need an appropriate environment.

Nevertheless, Lorenzo Fertitta, UFC socio-majority, plans to adapt the Morumbi stadium for the event. The idea is to cover the octagon to receive between 70 and 80 thousand people. According to Fertitta, the cold weather in Sao Paulo during this period will not be a problem. It will be possible to sell 68 thousand tickets to the grandstand and at least 16 thousand to the ground.

The city registered the biggest public ever in the 5th Virada Esportiva of São Paulo

According to the Municipality of São Paulo, about 3.5 million people have participated of the 5th Virada Esportiva. It was a record crowd. There were a thousand meeting points throughout the city and around 2,500 free activities across Sao Paulo. This represents a 40% increase when compared to 2010.

The city's mayor, Gilberto Kassab, said the weather was responsible for the success of the event.

The event can still be improved. For future events, the city could invest more in event publicity, and also in making more equipment available to serve the population. Some places have received many participants and people had to wait in lines for almost an hour.

Changes and improvements will be evaluated by the city's secretary of sports, Bebeto Haddad.

The opening match of the Brazilian World Cup will be in Sao Paulo

According to the newspaper Estadão, São Paulo will be the city chosen for the World Cup 2014 opening game. FIFA does not have an alternative option. Although Joseph Blatter has indicated Rio as the venue of the event, Rio de Janeiro didn't apply to host the opening game. The FIFA congress that is going to happen in Zurich on October 20 and 21, São Paulo city will be announced as the address of the first game of the World 2014.

FIFA's decision takes into account the infrastructure of the city, hotel accommodation, transport and airports. As well as the agility of state and municipal governments to set the stadium building. Belo Horizonte and Brasilia, are also trying to host the opening match, but both do not have the same structure of São Paulo.

"Sao Paulo is most well-structured city in Brazil", said Emanuel Fernandes, state secretary of planning. In the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, there is only São Paulo as alternative.

The president of the CBF, Ricardo Teixeira, made his congratulations to the governor Geraldo Alckmin (PSDB-SP) because the Corinthians (one football society and team of Sao Paulo) and Odebrecht have presented yesterday the financial guarantees for the construction of the stadium Itaquera to the FIFA.

With this news, Sao Paulo has big chances to host the opening game of the 2014 World Cup.

Heavy rain in Sao Paulo causes serious problems for the Brazilian Formula Indy Race

The rain that hit the city of Sao Paulo on Sunday (May 1st) changed the Sao Paulo F-Indy race to Monday (May 2nd). The decision was agreed upon at a meeting between CET (Traffic Engineering Company) representatives and the Formula Indy Organization. This isn't the first time that the rain has caused problems for the circuit at the Sambadrome. Last year, the track had to be rebuilt because of drainage problems. This year, one of the reasons the race date was moved to May was because of possible problems with rain. Unfortunately, the rain started few laps after the race did.

According to the mayor of São Paulo, Gilberto Kassab, the possibility of changing the racetrack is ruled out for next year. The mayor said that the current circuit set is considered the most appropriate place for the race. "It is the more appropriate [place], and therefore, its contract has been set for ten years", said Kassab.

Bia Figueiredo, who left the race at the end, reminded the media that she has faced more serious problems than a rainy day in other circuits. "In a race in Kansas, we got a tornado warning and did not know what to do. In Japan, there are earthquakes. If we get worried about what might happen everywhere we go, the race will never happen. We must be proud of the Sao Paulo race track."

F-Indy: Anhembi Circuit has the longest stretch of all Indy Championships

The route of the second annual São Paulo Indy 300, which will take place on May 1^st, is considered one of the most demanding racetracks of 2011. The 4080-meter-long track, which runs through parts of the Sambadrome, Avenida Olavo Fontoura, and the Marginal Tietê (highway). 

The track has both sharp and wide curves, as well as long stretches of track that provide good points for cars to pass each other. The Reta dos Bandeirantes, or the Bandeirantes Stretch, which corresponds to the part of the track that involves the Marginal, is the longest part, at 1500 meters long – even longer than traditional high-speed oval circuits (such as the one in Indianapolis). In this stretch, the powerful cars of the race (those that have 3.5-liter V8 engines and that generate about 650 horsepower) can reach up to 300 km/h – a high speed for a race involving city streets. Sao Paulo Formula Indy 2011: Almost done!

 

The street circuit Anhembi is almost ready to receive the Formula Indy 2011, arriving in Sao Paulo in the next weekend. Everything is already on pace to final adjustments to the weekend of training and racing. The VIP sections, bleachers and security fences are the last steps to accomplished.

The main concern is the "sambódromo straight", which has a concrete floor. But this year is much more adherent than last year. There are many grooves that ensure a greater flow of water. The asphalt of the boulevards and around the marginal Tietê was remade and the pitlane and the Anhembi exhibition pavilion also is ready. The equipment is arriving this week and the riders and official teams arrive until Thursday this week.

São Paulo Step Formula Indy is scheduled to start at 1pm on Sunday, 1st day May.

São Paulo Indy 2010

The second edition of the Sao Paulo Indy 300 will feature five Brazilians in the starting grid. They are Helio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan, Vitor Meira, and Raphael Matos Bia Figueiredo. The race will be on May 1st at the Anhembi Circuit, which will be assembled in the Sambadrome in the north of Sao Paulo. This will be the fourth race of the 2011 season of Formula Indy.

In the first race, 27 drivers from 13 nationalities participated. The United States tops the rankings with six representatives. Brazil is in second with five, England and Canada came in third with three, Australia has two drivers, and Spain, Colombia, New Zealand, Scotland, Switzerland, Japan, Venezuela and France have each sent one competitor.

Only two of last year's Brazilians will not compete in the Indy 300 Itaipava Sao Paulo by Nestle. Romancini Mario and Mario Moraes failed to reach agreements with their teams and will not be racing. The other five representatives of the country competed in the first edition of the race in 2010 and are already familiar with the layout of the track in Sao Paulo.

São Paulo can host 6 matches in the 2014 World Cup and bring around 500 thousand people to the city

Despite having no brick built so far, the stadium of Corinthians, on the east city zone, should be the stage for at least 6 Cup matches in 2014.

The decision came along last month, before the FIFA president Sepp Blatter hurry up the pace of two projects amoung the 12 host cities: Sao Paulo and Rio.

Those cities will host the most appealing matches of the competition: the opening and final respectively. Rio will have 7 matches.

Thus, statistics point to 500 thousand extra tourists (during the period) than average in 2014 due to World Cup, according to SPTuris (responsible department of tourism in Sao Paulo).

The brand new stadium (under construction) might to host the opening game, a semifinal and four other matches.

The study entitled "Sustainable Brazil - socioeconomic impacts of the 2014 World Cup", made in June 2010 by the company Ernst & Young, estimates that it will mean R$ 5.94 billion related to the event activities. Other sectors such as food, shopping, culture, transport, communication, medical and legal services, are included. SPTuris says that the city expects 15 million tourists in 2014 against the average 11 million every year.

Free classes of Tai Chi Chuan

Starting from today (January 12) the Samaritano Hospital of São Paulo will offer free classes of Tai Chi Chuan, every  Wednesday and Friday, 8:30 am to 9:30 am, at the Praça Irmãos Karman.

Since last year, the Hospital also offers stretching classes every Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 10am.

 

Those interested should attend the venue on the class day and contact the teacher who has a shirt of the Samaritano Hospital.

 

Virada Esportiva - sport everywhere in the city

Virada Esportiva 2010 is taking place during this week end, it started yesterday but you still have time to enjoy some sport today! This edition has some new features such as hang gliding simulator, the Ecological Games of Cantareira, the Swoop (parachuting from a helicopter) and sports on ce. The official program of the event has more than two thousand activities spread across all regions of the capital.

The goal is to awaken the population and to push them to include the daily practice of physical activities in their routine. Among the places that are hosting the event: Vale do Anhangabaú, Viaduto do Chá, Praça do Patriarca, Nova Luz, Parque do Ibirapuera and da Cantareira, Represa Guarapiranga.

Besides the events in the city center, the Virada will have more than a thousand activities to take place in schools Clubs, Community Clubs, Leisure Streets, parks, SESC's and other sports venues. The public expectation is to surpass the mark of 2009 in which more than 3 million people participated in sports activities.

A new park in Sao Paulo: Parque Várzeas do Tietê

It was delivered these days the first phase of the Parque Várzeas do Tietê with the opening of a 15 km cyclestreet. Considered the largest linear park in the world, 75 km long and an area of 107 squared kilometers, it must only be completed in 2014.

In this first stage, the investment was R$ 377 million, 30% from the government of Sao Paulo State and 70% financed by the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB). The park should benefit 3 million people in the east area of the city at an estimated cost of R$ 1.7 billion.

The project design includes recreational facilities, while seeking to restore and preserve natural floodplain of the river and reduce flood risks in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. In all, 33 units of leisure, culture and sport, and 250 km of cycle track, 77 football fields and 129 sports courts.

Ladeira da Morte (Slope of Death) - The Resurrection

The name of this post could sound scary but actually it will be very fun for the lovers of skateboard. Tomorrow, Sunday August 29th, there will be a downhill slide championship organized by the Tribo Skate Magazine. After 21 years since the slope of the street Professor Paulino Longo (old street Varginha) entered the history of skateboarding with its national championships in the late 80s, casters will be consumed in the Slope of Death (Ladeira da Morte) officially this Sunday.

Golf inside Sao Paulo

A LED display of 76 square meters and sound of 80,000 watts of power, and medical stations, security guards and one room for entertainment with 4D cinema and workshops. A stage with 12 meters is set up to receive Latin artists and groups.
Yesterday for the first match of Brasil there were almost 50.000 people. It is possible to assist other teams' games too.There are many pubs around the city to watch the games too but this is the only option for free offered byt the city council.
