Matisse for the first time in Sao Paulo

The Pinacoteca do Estado Art Gallery presents the first solo exhibition of Henri Matisse in Brazil. The public will have access to some of the color screens of the French artist, along with Pablo Picasso, was one of the major processors in the arts during the 20th century.

Died 1954, aged 84, Matisse led to confusion and strangeness with color screens, which contrasted with what was done at the time. Nowadays, the Matisse's exhibition, however, is not a retrospective.

At the Pinacoteca, some of his most important paintings, aren't among the 93 art works on display. Thus, the show exposes a side of the less popular artists: sculptures, prints, drawings and collages.

Still, it is likely that the public attempt a similar to the 150 thousand people who saw Rodin in 1995.

As the first solo exhibition of Matisse in Brazil, the curator is also concerned with presenting the biography of the artist. In each room there will be not only the works of Picasso's great rival, but also pictures of Matisse by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Man Ray.

There are also works of contemporary French painters who use the techniques and inventions of the Matisse.
